THIS IS WHAT'S NEW IN MY WORLD - WHAT'S NEW IN YOURS?

ORT asks Sonie to do be a keynote speaker

On September 25th Sonie Lasker will do an interactive self-defense seminar for the Sarasota chapter of ORT, a fundraising organization. She will be speaking on personal safety and awareness for women and for men as well. For those who attended the presentation at Suncoast Audi, this time you will get a chance to try some karate out yourself! An event not to be missed - stay tuned for more information.

Sonie is cast in a coveted role for the annual Got A Minute funraiser play fest

Under the guidance of the ever helpful man about town, Cliff Roles, Sonie Lasker has been cast in the eclectic Players Theater's annual breast cancer fundraiser, "Got A Minute?".

The performance is a series of one minute plays and according to Mr. Roles, the coveted acting gig of the the season in SRQ. Sonie is looking forward to revisiting her talent for the stage and immersing herself in her passion for theater. This awesome opportunity came to her thanks to Pam Wiley and Cliff Roles, who are both on the board of directors for this very worthy cause. The group hopes to raise over $25,000 for breast cancer research.

Breast cancer is a topic close to Sonie, as two of her three step sisters are survivors of the disease. Her mother, Judy Krakow is a board member of Komen in Sarasota and she gives Sonie other opportunities to volunteer her time for this cause.

The play will show three times at the Players Theater in Sarastoa on September 12th and 13th. Tickets will be for sale online.

The tournament was fun, with a lot of good competition. There was a big group of Okinawan Shuri Ryu karate people there from all over the country and that is good thing to see. It is really fun to compete against people from my own style. There were at least three or four people performing Bassai Dai kata that I competed against and that was really cool.

We had a nice sized women’s fighting division and my friend Jodi from SportMartialArts.com took first. She deserved it - she is a really good fighter.

Next up is the US Open over the July 4th weekend. This will be in my home state of Florida at Disney’s Coronado Springs resort. I am looking forward to it

Walk with the Doc this past weekend was a blast!

Rochelle Herman hosts a lovely program called Walk with the Doc. A great group of heal-minded and excited people walk from Mattison's Grill, around Island Park, then back to downtown Sarasota, ending through Farmer’s Market and a light breakfast supplied by Mattison’s grill. The star of the day is of course Rochelle, who brings in well-versed doctors to freely share their knowledge with the public. You can ask anything (within reason of course) and the doctor will answer. There is also a raffle with all sorts of goodies and books and more! Definitely listen to Rochelle’s show or check out her web site to see when the next walk will be. www.tellrochelle.com. I also had the honor of meeting Mr. Cliff Roles, writer, actor and award winning broadcastor. He has had quite an interesting carreer. If you check out his web site www.cliffroles.com you can read about his colorful life. Cliff has a talk show Monday through Friday on WSRQ 1220 A.M. and on June 18th at 4.30, I will be his honored guest so tune in!

Sonie Makes the Rose Report by Theresa Rose

The Rose Report by Theresa Rose 6/1/08

Stuff I Like

This gorgeous blonde is my good friend and trainer Sonie Lasker.  She and I met at Shapes Fitness last year and I have been a loyal client of hers ever since.  Not only is she a fantastic personal trainer, she is also an amazing Karate champion.  She teaches at the Suncoast Karate Dojo twice a week and holds multiple world titles.  My own little EmmaBean is one of Sonie's students!

I helped Sonie create her web site and believe so strongly in the work she does.  She is a true example of focus, dedication, perseverance, strength, and downright sass.  Check out her web site to learn more about martial arts and see pics of her cute kitten Mojo (great name!).

End of the year Gala is already in the works.....

For all of my generous sponsors and those who are helping make this a successful season we are planning a black tie event that will really make you drool!! The evening will be sponsored by Jeremy Hammond-Chambers, chef extrodinaire!! His wife, and my dear friend, Jules Price will contribute and hopefully bless us with her famous singing voice.                 This is sure to be an evening worth remembering for anyone who has ever had the honour of dining at Cork on St. Armands Circle, Jeremy developed the menu for that restaurant before embarking further onto his own business of private entertaining and teaching. He is truly a genius. We are lucky to have him cater our event. Of course it is always fun to put on pretty clothes and take some pictures......

Thanks for dropping by -                                                                                                  - SL

Shihan Judge runs a demo in Sarasota Florida

On the same day as the tournament, my esteemed teacher, Shihan Donna Judge, ran a demo for the youth of our dojo in order to help raise awareness of the elections coming up for Sheriff. Shihan tells us that unless we make a change in our own worlds, the big wide world will remain the same. We can sit and complain about petrol prices and argue about healthcare, but we need to learn about the candidates who are actually able to begin to make changes within our own communities. We need to decide that life is precious and especially if we have children, or someone we love has children - we best make sure that this world is going to be safe for them. It all begins with these seemingly smaller elections. We have a voice in our communities. It doesn't matter who you are voting for from our perspective. Just learn the issues and make an informed judgment on who you want in office. Not only running this business we call the USA, but these other companies within our country because they are all connected and we have a chance to make some sort of impact on how our government is run.

This is my teacher: Shihan Donna Judge. She is my mentor, my inspiration. Some day I hope that I may resemble my teaher.

During the demo that Shihan ran for the kids at our dojo, they worked hard, had fun and did karate. Shihan was proud and that is the most important thing for us students. They all took a picture with the man running for Sheriff and is was great for the school and our youth. Shihan has been the guiding influence on my adult life in making me a more responsable person and I am grateful for that - among many other things, to numerous to list. Please know Shihan - if you chance to read this, I am honored to be your student.
